The annual Furry 5K, a fun run (or walk!) benefitting the Seattle Animal Shelter Foundation, has gone virtual for the second year in a row due to ongoing concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you’re interested in joining in the 2021 Furry 5K but aren’t sure how to participate, here’s some information to help you along.
What is a virtual 5K?
The term virtual 5K may sound confusing, especially as we’re used to virtual gatherings taking place on a screen. In this case, “virtual” really just means “remote.” We won’t be gathered together for a single race event — and because this year’s Furry 5K is taking place June 13-20, you have a full week to join in. Complete your 3.1-mile walk or run wherever and whenever works for you. Maybe that’s in your neighborhood, on a scenic walk with your four-legged friend, or even on a treadmill in your garage.
Three 5K routes in the Seattle area
For many people, it’s more fun to get out of their own neighborhood to complete a 5K. Fortunately, there are plenty of beautiful, fun trails to explore in the Greater Seattle area. Here are three dog-friendly trails that can be used to complete the virtual Furry 5K.
1. Greenlake Loop
A classic trail in the city, one loop around Greenlake is just under five kilometers, or 2.8 miles. Fortunately, Greenlake is known for its beauty and sites, so you can either keep going around the loop for another 0.3 miles to make the full 5K at 3.1 miles or walk to your favorite coffee or ice cream shop around the loop to get yourself a post-race treat.
2. Washington Park Arboretum
There’s not a much more peaceful walk than a stroll through the Washington Park Arboretum. Full of different flora species and plenty of intriguing sniffs for your furry friend, this is a great trail to wander through as you participate in the Furry 5K. While there may not be one consecutive route, you can use a pedometer, your smartphone, or a smart watch to keep track of your mileage.
3. Seward Park
Seward Park in South Seattle is our last recommendation. In fact, it was the site of previous Furry 5K fundraisers in recent years. Take in a gorgeous walk along the western bank of Lake Washington and spend some quality time with your pets on a nice June day in Seattle.
What the Furry 5K means to Seattle Animal Shelter pets
Regardless of where you run or walk this year, the Furry 5K is an active way to support the incredible work of the Seattle Animal Shelter. From the vital work of cruelty and abuse to the everyday success stories of adopted pets, the money that is raised during this event directly benefits the shelter and its ability to care for the homeless pets that need it most. There are plenty of scenic areas to walk and run in the Greater Seattle area — join us June 13-20!
